On-Site Surgeries
During my very first visit to Rwanda, I was confronted with cases of deformities and burns requiring urgent attention.
The problem was not the competence of local medical personnel—it was the lack of training and medical supplies and, in some cases, inadequate infrastructure. Even before I leave Germany, I use digital media to obtain information about the pending cases so that I can better focus my preparations.
Working closely with colleagues, I prepared treatment plans and obtained the necessary materials.

Most of the operations were on children. Follow-up care could be coordinated from home by continually sharing images of the healing process . The surgeries take place at the University Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda, and at a regional hospital in Gikonto led by a German nun and surgeon.
Similar operations will soon be performed at a small hospital in Kabanga, Tanzania, built by the “Herz zu Herz” (“Heart to Heart”) organization of Kempten, Germany.
