Helping People Help Themselves –
My Work in Africa

“Retirement was supposed to be restful, but instead I felt restless.” It all started when I met with a friend from my university days, and that encounter soon made me want to pass on my medical expertise. I was especially keen to provide support in the fields of hand surgery, microsurgery and plastic surgery in countries where practicing medicine is difficult.

Opportunities for sharing my knowledge in places like Rwanda and Tanzania fit that aim particularly well.

These countries struggle not just with a challenging medical landscape, but also with high levels of poverty, which make the situation that much more difficult. My experiences and the feedback I received there made it clear to me how important it is to help people help themselves. Doing so keeps me in good form professionally while allowing me to make a meaningful contribution.

In order to further that mission, I regularly give short talks for various organizations such as service groups, relief organizations, companies and private donors. These events help heighten awareness of the needs in affected regions and gather support.
